FAQ » Costs
What is the cost and how does it compare to other programs?
The cost varies by length of study and options: see Costs. We keep our costs low by concentrating on outstanding language instruction and student support services. We are a considerable step above the traditional Japanese language school because we keep to our core strengths. We do not offer classes in other subjects or make huge marketing expenditures by frequent college visits. We rely instead on our partner universities, the internet, and word-of-mouth advertising. Our testimonials speak for themselves. We are and continue to be a Gakkou Hojin institution certified by the Tokyo Metropolitan Governor.

How much money do you recommend for out-of-pocket expenses?
We recommend bringing at least $1500 per semester for personal spending and meals. You can bring a little less for homestay (where breakfasts and dinners are covered), but we find that most students spend most of their money in the first few weeks of the program. It can go very quickly in Tokyo—it’s an expensive city. Some of this depends on personal spending habits, so be sure to decide whether you are a big spender or frugal.
The homestay option is about $600 more than the dorm option, but it provides breakfast and dinner. (For a dorm with meal plan, the cost of the meal plan is about $600, so it balances out roughly.) Our most popular dorm is the dorm without a meal plan. It is located in Ikebukuro, a 20-minute subway ride from KCP, plus a little walking. Many students can cook, and others choose lower cost dining options like oBento restaurants. $1500 is a good number to remember, but some students spend much more, and others spend less. For more information and financial tips, see Costs. Of course, if you travel elsewhere in Japan, you’ll need to budget separately for that.
Are there extra fees for school-related books, cultural events, and so on?
Your books are included in the program cost. Fees for most cultural events are included as well, but there may be exceptions, and you are responsible for the cost of transportation to Saturday cultural events. Costs for KCP cultural excursions not on Saturday or outside Tokyo are covered in the program fee. Usually these extra travel expenses do not exceed $50/per term. For a list of what other items are included in the program fee, see Costs.

Are the transportation costs included for excursions and school events?
Yes, most of the excursions and school events that are offered do include transportation costs.
For excursions associated with the Culture class on weekends, usually students meet at the school, unless another location is specified. If the excursion destination is outside Tokyo, students must return to Tokyo with the class in order for KCP to pay for the round trip. However, if the excursion site is within Tokyo, you are responsible for your transportation costs home.
Sometimes, if the weather is nice, language instructors will take students to nearby parks to study. They may even take students to museums or other short destinations from school. Entire school outings are offered periodically during the year, and students may be asked to join a BBQ at a nearby beach or park, or a school trip might be planned to a festival or cultural site. These non-Culture class costs will not be included in the package fee.
Usually, however, the out of pocket transportation and entrance costs for a student that are not covered in the package price never exceed $50/semester.
