Tokyo Powers Down to Save Energy
With the onset of summer and in the wake of the recent Tsunami disasters, Tokyo is powering down to conserve electricity. The work schedules of government employees have been shifted to an earlier time to take advantage of daylight, and to lessen the use of air conditioning and office lights at night.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building has joined the campaign to save energy after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake by stopping operations of several electrical appliances and transport systems.
- The lifts at the building are temporarily unavailable.
- Escalators, are also not being used. It’s time to take the stairs and get some great exercise, too!
- The computer monitor may have been turned off but brochures and pamphlets are still an effective way to provide visitors the information they need.

TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) offers loads of helpful information and tips on how to save energy whether you are a resident or a commercial customer. Suggestions include ways to keep a building cool during the hot summer and lifestyle changes that are easy to follow.
Here are some useful tips by TEPCO:
- Place rattan blinds on the windows and doors to keep the harsh sunlight out
- Wear sweat absorbent clothing and use quick drying bedding
- Sprinkle water on the balcony, garden, asphalt, and concrete floors to reduce heat via water evaporation
- Spend more time together in one room to decrease simultaneous use of air conditioning and electric lamps in different parts of the house or building
