Do I Have to Go to a Sponsor School to Attend KCP?
Can I Attend KCP If I Don’t Go to a Partner University?
Yes. KCP International Japanese Language School is open to students from a wide variety of colleges and universities, as well as adult learners who are not currently enrolled in school.
You do not need to attend one of KCP’s sponsor schools to participate in the program.
What Is the Difference Between Sponsor Schools and Affiliate Schools?
KCP works with two types of partner institutions:
Affiliate Schools
Students must be enrolled at an affiliate school in order to participate through that institution.
Sponsor Schools
Sponsor schools can accept students from other colleges and universities and may provide academic credit options for eligible participants.
KCP’s sponsor schools include:
- Western Washington University
- University of Idaho
- Lincoln University
Many students who earn academic credit through a sponsor school do not actually attend that university as degree-seeking students.
What If I Want Academic Credit?
If you plan to transfer academic credit back to your home institution, it is important to understand your school’s requirements before applying.
Some colleges and universities may award credit based on KCP coursework and documentation alone. Other institutions require students to enroll through one of KCP’s sponsor schools so that an official transcript can be issued by a U.S. school of record.
Before applying, students should:
- Consult their registrar
- Speak with their study abroad office
- Confirm transfer credit policies
- Determine whether a sponsor school is required for credit transfer
Because transfer credit decisions are made by the receiving institution, students should verify requirements in advance to choose the academic credit option that best fits their degree program.
What If I Don’t Need Academic Credit?
Many students attend KCP simply to improve their Japanese language skills and experience life in Japan.
If you:
- Are primarily interested in language immersion
- Do not need transferable academic credit
- Meet program eligibility requirements
you may be able to apply directly through KCP.
Who Typically Chooses KCP Direct?
KCP Direct is often a good option for:
- Adult learners
- Recent graduates
- Gap-year students
- Professionals seeking Japanese language development
- College students who do not need academic credit
These students are typically focused on gaining Japanese proficiency through an intensive immersion experience rather than earning university credit.
Is KCP a Good Choice for Serious Japanese Language Study?
Yes. Many students choose KCP because of its strong academic focus and immersive learning environment.
Whether you attend through a sponsor school or apply directly, the core experience remains the same: intensive Japanese language study, cultural immersion in Tokyo, and opportunities to make significant progress toward your Japanese language goals.
